Wildlife safaris

Big Game Safaris is our specialty, a wildlife safari to east Africa is like no other and is perfect for any visitor whether first time or repeat. The diverse and stunning landscapes plus variety of game and birdlife is unrivalled. We visit National parks and game reserves like the famous Maasai Mara an extension of the Serengeti to witness The Great Wildebeest Migration where a million strong wildebeest and zebra cross the mara river with crocodiles lying in wait. Amboseli National Park renown for the snowcapped Mt Kilimanjaro is also one of the places to see large herds of elephants and the occasional flamingo. Samburu Game Reserve in Northern Kenya is a true jewel hosting species that are either endemic or endangered such as the reticulated giraffe, grevy's zebra, gerenuk, Somali ostrich and Oryx. A big game safari is not complete without visiting a wildlife conservancy such as Olpejeta conservancy to witness conservation efforts to protect the endangered rhinos. For the bird enthusiasts the rift valley lakes offer the best opportunity to see a wide variety of birds some endemic or rare and take a boat ride in the lakes to watch pods of hippos floating around and dramatic dives by kingfishers and fish eagles. Tsavo National Park in southern Kenya is one of the few truly wild places with stunning scenery, volcanic mountains, rivers, hills, lava flows and diverse wildlife. Big herds of elephants, greater kudu, wild dogs, and big cats are well represented in the park.

Family / Group safaris

When travelling with children the aim is to create memories that last. A family safari brings your children closer to nature, children over six years tend to appreciate the safari adventure more but we have had younger children on successful safaris. Special needs for members of the family will be considered such as wheelchair access or flexible mealtimes for children to make your safari as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

At safari Gurus Ventures we continue to champion and support wildlife conservation initiatives around the region. We curate safaris that take you through conservancies and sanctuaries for endangered animals like Olpejeta conservancy a rhino sanctuary or a visit to the Sheldrick's wildlife trust that cares for orphaned elephants. Guests can take part in activities such as dog and lion tracking. A conservation safari cannot be complete without interacting with the true conservation heroes; the local communities such as the Maasai, Samburu tribes that have lived for ages alongside wildlife on their land.

A few days fly camping safari expeditions, under the stars to the largest desert lake in the world -lake Turkana will take you across deserts, volcanic mountains and rock outcrops while experiencing the vibrant traditional cultures. Our adventure safaris are flexible and easy going. we sleep in comfortable dome tents or net tents while enjoying the incredible African sky. We use bucket showers and at sunset you unwind watching the sunset with your favourite drink in hand. Meanwhile our able chef is using available resources to produce sumptuous meals the whole time.

Historical sites such as the Fort Jesus, Vasco Da Gama pillar in Malindi and the Gede Ruins are worth a visit.

Where we Go

We specialize in customised safaris in the East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania which are the most popular safari destinations for decades and for good reason; the variety of wildlife, diverse geography and varied cultures are unrivalled on the continent. With year-round access to wildlife Kenya is one of the African countries where one can see an immense variety of mammals, birds and varied landscapes. We will include well known areas such as the Serengeti NP or the Maasi Mara GR in your itinerary but also incorporate some of the remote areas off the beaten track. An incredibly diverse range of cultural experiences with local tribes goes without saying.

Kenya Safaris

Kenya is described as "all of Africa in one country". Kenya enjoys some of the world's greatest biodiversity resulting in unparalleled species and sub species varieties. Kenya is simply the best wildlife viewing destination in Africa. It offers a chance to immerse yourself in the spectacle of Big Game, predators and prey entwined in a cycle of life and death. Kenya straddles the equator with geography ranging from snow-capped Mount Kenya, second highest in Africa to lush tropical rainforest and golden sands at the sea level. Kenya not only boasts every known landform but also a wealth of animals and birdlife which owes its existence to the contrasts in the country's terrain. We are among the last generations to have the opportunity to experience the vanishing cultures of East Africa. You can immerse yourself in the ways and cultures of some of Africa's proudest and most striking tribes. Kenya also boasts of 480kms of the Indian Ocean Coastline and coral reef which is home to a plethora of marine life. You can explore by dhow, yacht, motorboat to dive, snorkel, and swim or explore the mangrove swamps and creeks. The coast is home to a striking mix of people and culture with beautiful ancient Swahili architecture.

Tanzania Safaris

Few destinations in Africa can rival Tanzania's diversity of wildlife and landscapes. From the game filled plains of the Serengeti to the snow-capped peaks of Mt Kilimanjaro to the coral reefs and the sandy beaches of Zanzibar a Tanzania Safari offers travellers some of the most diverse safari experience with exceptional parks and reserves giving visitors unparalleled game viewing. Other than the popular destinations such as the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Kilimanjaro, discover hidden gems off the beaten track such as chimpanzee tracking in the untouched rainforests of Mahale and Rubondo or enjoy crowd free game viewing in the wild landscapes of Nyerere (formerly Selous) NP and the beautiful Ruaha NP.

Rwanda Safaris

Rwanda is where in the 1960s Diana Forsey researched and habituated Mountain Gorillas in the Virunga Mountains. It is characterised by impressive biodiversity with volcanoes and highlands rainforests with rolling hills and forest canopies providing home to half of the world's surviving mountain gorillas. Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda is the place to see the boisterous chimpanzees and skies full of birds. In Akagera National Park which is low lying you find savanna game like lions and elephants. Rarely experienced in isolation Gorilla trekking safaris combine other destinations such as Kenya or Tanzania.

Uganda Safaris

In his book "My African Journey", Winston Churchill referred to Uganda as the" Pearl of Africa" describing his safari to Uganda in 1907.Uganda is one of Africa's best kept secrets. It has it all, wilderness areas, breathtaking scenery, mountain ranges, incredible birds and primate watching Mountain Gorilla tracking in Uganda is one of the most exhilarating safari experiences. You get close to the giant primates observing them observing you. Their human like behaviour and social interaction creates a connection in each of us. Uganda is home to other primates like the chimpanzees in Kibale National Park. Kidepo Valley, Quenn Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Parks offer game drives in savanna environment with elephants and lions represented.

Here are some of the frequently asked questions;

When should we begin planning our Safari?

It's best to begin planning well in advance possibly one year especially if you wish to book during peak season. It ensures availability of best guides and space at the best camps and lodges.

What is the right age of children on safari?

Many families bring children six years and above but occasionally we have had younger children on very successful safaris.

What is the ideal group size?

We sometimes take just one person travelling alone and sometimes groups of up to sixty people. Mostly we take groups of friends or family. Our itineraries will include activities suitable for different ages.

When is the best time to visit?

There is no best time of the year for a safari. The busiest time due to school vacations and holidays are Christmas and new year and from early June to the end of August during the Great wildebeest migration in the Maasai Mara.

What should I bring on safari?

We will send you information that will help you in packing and preparation. Suggestions will include clothes to bring, baggage size, photographic equipment, binoculars, information on visa and other health issues.
